Sri Lanka consultation on CEDAW shadow report

A consultation focusing on the Sri Lanka Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (LBT) shadow report, submitted to Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) at the Sixty-sixth session, was held in Wadduwa recently.

The consultation brought together rights activists and members of women’s rights and LGBT organisations to discuss the contents of the report along with the concluding recommendations which were released by the CEDAW committee at the end of the session.

Although submitted to the committee in English, the reports were available in the Sinhala and Tamil languages at the consultation for a more comprehensive discussion.

The shadow report highlights the contentious issues that surround the Sri Lanka LBT community and through it the participants were able to get a better understanding of Sri Lanka’s context at the consultation.

The Sri Lanka LBT shadow report was prepared by the Women and Media Collective and was presented to the CEDAW committee in Geneva on the 22nd of February 2017.

The shadow report was prepared with the support of several members of the LGBT community.
