Women of Wednesday condemn the use of the photograph of Vidya Sivaloganathan

Women of Wednesday condemn the use of the photograph of Vidya Sivaloganathan, which depicts her victimized by rapists and murderers. Even social media sites which supposedly support responsible reporting should be more sensitive to not contributing to her victimization. This only serves a purpose of sensationalizing the issue and is not taking into consideration the privacy of the victim as well as the impact of this on family members.

Women of Wednesday would also like to stress that in the absence of obtaining consent, this blatant publicizing of the image is violating the very basic ethics of journalism. While this photograph is in the public domain, it is our fervent request that those who are supportive of Women’s Rights would take a stand in not contributing to her degradation.

In order to speak up for the Rights of Women – We must ensure that the steps we take are not counter productive and demean the very principles of what we stand for.
