Celebrated 40 years of unwavering feminist leadership and brought together a diverse group of expert speakers, activists and thinkers from across the Global South for a full-day conference on 16th of June, held at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo.\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div dir=\"auto\">WMC was founded in 1984 by Sunila Abeysekara and a group of feminists who came together as an informal collective. Their goal was to unpack and question women&#8217;s representation in media at the time in order to create critical and nuanced commentary on how women and women&#8217;s bodies were depicted in media. Eventually, this informal collective would become the The Women and Media Collective &#8211; an organization that would be a pioneer in developing the ideals of feminism in Sri Lanka through discussions, debates, collaborations, partnerships, protests and activism over four long decades of resistance and resilience.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">As we look back on \ud835\udff0\ud835\udfec \ud835\uddec\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddff\ud835\ude00 \ud835\uddfc\ud835\uddf3 \ud835\uddd9\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddfa\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf6\ud835\ude00\ud835\ude01 \ud835\udddf\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddf1\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddff\ud835\ude00\ud835\uddf5\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddfd: \ud835\uddd6\ud835\uddfc\ud835\uddf9\ud835\uddf9\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddf0\ud835\ude01\ud835\uddf6\ud835\ude03\ud835\uddf2 \ud835\uddd4\ud835\uddf0\ud835\ude01\ud835\uddf6\ud835\ude03\ud835\uddf6\ud835\ude00\ud835\uddfa, \ud835\udde5\ud835\uddf2\ud835\ude00\ud835\uddf6\ud835\ude00\ud835\ude01\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf0\ud835\uddf2 &amp; \ud835\udde5\ud835\uddf2\ud835\ude00\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddf9\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf0\ud835\uddf2, we thank those who have stood by us through our four decades of work &#8211; from partnering collectives and organizations, to the activists and allies, former staff members, experts and resource persons and friends that helped us get to where we are today.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">For our celebration on the 16th, we hosted a full-day conference featuring two timely, topical and provocative sessions of discussions.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">The first session focused on a Feminist Political Economy of Work, Women and Intersectionality and fostered dialogues on the gendered aspect of unpaid care work, the effect of microfinance on women in Sri Lanka, the effect powerful financial markets have in exacerbating inequalities, women&#8217;s economic independence in rural communities as well as a tracing back of the history of women&#8217;s activism in Sri Lanka through to the present day.<\/div><\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">The second session of the conference, divided into two parts, began with an intriguing and thought-provoking focus on &#8220;Talib\u00e9&#8221; or Citizen Women&#8217;s Identity Politics in West Africa and Sri Lanka.
