recognises the social and economic value of unpaid care work and ensures that care work is redistributed equally among all individuals.<\/span><\/h4><h4>Mission: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working together to build a strong, socially, economically, and politically empowered coalition representing all sectors in policy making, planning, and paid work by recognizing unpaid care work,\u00a0 reducing the burden of such work on women and by redistributing care work equally within the family.<\/span><\/h4><div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 23rd July, we convened over 70 of our regional partner representatives and community members for the first National Convening of our\u00a0 Coalition on Unpaid Care Work.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the convening, we formed the National Committee for the coalition &#8211;\u00a0 a 12-member group made up of representatives from each of the regional partner organisations that WMC has been working\u00a0 on \u201cThe Care Project: Addressing Unpaid Care Work in Sri Lanka\u201d. The 12 organisations are:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajarata Praja Kendraya &#8211; Anuradhapura<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Association of Women with Disabilities (AKASA) &#8211; Anuradhapura\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SURIYA Women\u2019s Development Centre &#8211; Batticaloa<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Network for Advocating Requirements of Women (newArow) &#8211; Batticaloa<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Islamic Women\u2019s Association for Research and Empowerment (IWARE) &#8211; Batticaloa<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nation Forum for Women with Disabilities (NFWD) &#8211; Colombo<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Development Federation (WDF) &#8211; Hambantota<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THOLAMAI.V &#8211; Jaffna<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Resource Center (WRC) &#8211; Kurunegala<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Solidarity Front (WSF) &#8211; Nuwara Eliya<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eksath Lanka Welfare Foundation (EWLF) &#8211; Nuwara Eliya<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural Women\u2019s Front &#8211; Galle<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each represented district will form district-level committees so as to establish smaller sub-national level coalitions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, unpaid care work is now recognised as an important area of focus \u00a0 regarding gender equality and socioeconomic development. The Sustainable Development Goals, agreed on across the world in 2015 with a deadline\u00a0 for achievement in 2030, includes\u00a0 unpaid care\u00a0 in Goal number 5. Sri Lanka has\u00a0 been relatively\u00a0 slow in\u00a0 integrating\u00a0 the\u00a0 issue of unpaid care work into the country\u2019s socio-economic development agenda.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sri Lankan women shoulder a large majority of unpaid care work, unfairly and disproportionately. <a href=\"https:\/\/womenandmedia.org\/why-reduce-redistribute-ucw\/\">The time-use survey<\/a> (2025) conducted by WMC showed an average of 8.2 hours spent by women on unpaid care work while men only spent 5.2 hours on the same tasks and work. This gendered disparity narrows the opportunities that women have to participate in the paid workforce as well as participate in key decision-making spaces, or even to take up other activities that are of interest to them. Current national policies pay little or no attention to this extremely gendered division of labour and its impact on the lives of millions of women in the country.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goals of this Coalition are thus two fold:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthen collaboration between community organizations, women&#8217;s groups, and public and private sector stakeholders to ensure achievement of the social, economic, and political rights of women, with a particular focus on recognizing, reducing, and redistributing unpaid care work.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advocate for Recognition and Reduction of Unpaid Care Work at Community and Policy Levels structures.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Coalition will focus\u00a0 on the 5Rs of unpaid care work, recognizing, reducing, redistributing and responding to unpaid care work responsibilities of women and girls and\u00a0 increasing the representation of women and girls\u00a0 in decision making processes to reduce the disproportionate burden of care responsibilities. It will aim at raising awareness in communities on how truly gendered the sexual division of labour is with regard to unpaid care work, as well as the negative effects this unfair burden has on the wellbeing of women in the community,\u00a0 from limiting opportunities for women to join the workforce to participating in decision-making roles and spaces. These constraints in effect, can push\u00a0 women to being economically dependent on men. The Coalition\u2019s work will contribute to shifting the social norms that uphold such unfair division of labour and economic dependency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work of the Coalition goes beyond awareness raising. To meet the second goal of the Coalition, it will\u00a0 advocate for policy changes, at the community level andr at national level. To address the policy gap in Sri Lanka a comprehensive advocacy effort is needed to\u00a0 recognise the economic value of unpaid care work,\u00a0 to enable representation of unpaid care givers, and\u00a0 to reduce and redistribute unpaid care work . This expands care beyond the formal care economy and introduces policy to ease the burden of unpaid care work on women so they are better able to make choices and pursue opportunities independently.
