A workshop on Social Media for local council women members in the Ampara District was held in the Advanced Technological Institute Section in Samanthurai. This was a one day workshop held on the 17th of December 2018. 26 women local council members participated in the workshop. Both Sinhala and Tamil members attended the workshop where the majority were Tamil speaking members. Dr. Khalith from the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka was the resource person for the first half of the programme and covered the theory part of the workshop. The second half of the programme was a demonstrative session. At the end of the programme, the participants expressed that they would like to participate in more workshops such as these as they were eager to improve their social media skills and presence. They are interested in using social media platforms to advocate for various issues as a part of their work as local councilors.
