A media briefing to highlight the importance of the 25% women’s quota brought about for the upcoming Local Government elections was held at the Renuka Hotel in Colombo. With the mixed electoral system and the women’s quota, the elections, which are expected to be held on the 10th of February 2018 will be a historic moment. The need to introduce a women’s quota has been opined by women’s groups including the Women and Media Collective for decades and this is indeed a step forward to increase women’s representation in the political sphere.
The head table included representatives of five women’s groups in the island including Vilithu from the North and East, Women’s Resource Center from Kurunegala, Rural Women’s Front, Women’s Development Center in Badulla, Working Women’s Front from Galle and the Women and Media Collective from Colombo.
