Women and Media Collective conducted a pilot study on the Gender Pay Gap in Sri Lanka initiated by the Women Parliamentarians Caucus of the 9th Parliament of Sri Lanka. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches to explore the factors contributing to the gender pay gap. The study delved into various aspects, including efforts to reduce the gender pay gap, strategies for increasing female representation in decision-making roles, addressing gender-based harassment and discrimination, tackling hiring biases, reducing the care work burden on women, and attracting more women to male-dominated sectors. It involved key informant interviews and structured questionnaires to gather insights from stakeholders, including companies, trade unions, and employees in industries such as Free Trade Zones and port services in Colombo.<\/span><\/p>\n

The research culminated with final presentations held at the parliament premises on the 9th of August 2024. The event began with welcoming remarks and an introduction to the launch by Dr Sudarshani Fernandopulle. Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhana then addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of the research. Following these speeches, Dr Harsha De Silva, having read the study, discussed issues surrounding gender and the gender wage gap. Dr Sepali Kottegoda then presented the qualitative analysis which Dr Sepali Kottegoda, Anushka Opatha and Menasha Samaradiwakara conducted. Nilupulee Rathnayake and Kanishka Werawella led the quantitative analysis presentation, with Nilupulee Rathnayake presenting the research findings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the presentations, a period for open floor discussion was initiated. Members of the Parliament caucus, other dignitaries, INGO members, and the EFC all contributed remarks on the subject matter. They engaged in a detailed discussion, addressing various issues such as maternity benefits and law reforms. After a comprehensive exchange of ideas, the event was concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n
