dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Climate Change in Sri Lanka: A Call for Gender-Focused Action<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"3:1-3:551\"><span class=\"citation-68 citation-end-68\">Sri Lanka, despite being a low-carbon emitting country, is highly vulnerable to climate change, consistently ranking among the top ten countries at risk of extreme weather events<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-67 citation-end-67\">The nation faces significant financial losses from disasters, averaging LKR 50 billion (USD 313 million) annually due to damage to housing, infrastructure, agriculture, and relief efforts<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-66 citation-end-66\">Floods account for the largest share of these losses, followed by cyclones, high winds, droughts, and landslides<\/span>.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:660\"><span class=\"citation-65 citation-end-65\">The country&#8217;s heavy reliance on climate-sensitive livelihoods like agriculture, fisheries, and tea plantations makes it particularly susceptible to disruptions from monsoons, altered rainfall, and other weather-induced events<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-64 citation-end-64\">Projections indicate increased intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and intensified rainfall variability, especially during the Yala season<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-63 citation-end-63\">Rising sea levels are also a grave concern, particularly for the South and Southwestern coastal areas, threatening displacement, ecosystems, infrastructure, and water scarcity<\/span>.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"7:1-7:640\"><span class=\"citation-62 citation-end-62\">In response, Sri Lanka ratified the Paris Agreement in 2016 and updated its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in 2020, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 and 70% renewable energy in electricity generation by 2030<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-61 citation-end-61\">The country has also implemented various initiatives, including banning agro-chemicals and single-use plastics, and promoting organic farming and e-mobility<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-60 citation-end-60\">While some NDC actions are unconditional and tackled by the government, others are conditional and rely on international support for climate financing and technology transfer<\/span>.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"9:1-9:374\"><span class=\"citation-59 citation-end-59\">Despite robust policy frameworks for climate change mitigation and adaptation, the primary focus remains on economic resilience, often sidelining vulnerable communities<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-58 citation-end-58\">These vulnerable groups include women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and low-income communities engaged in agriculture and fisheries<\/span>.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:40\"><strong>The Disproportionate Impact on Women<\/strong><\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"13:1-13:671\"><span class=\"citation-57 citation-end-57\">Women in Sri Lanka are disproportionately affected by climate risks, especially pregnant women, mothers, and those from marginalized communities<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-56 citation-end-56\">While women contribute significantly to the rural agricultural sector (33-34%), their roles in food systems, poverty reduction, and climate resilience often go unrecognized in national data and policy<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-55 citation-end-55\">Climate change exacerbates these inequalities, leading to increased crop losses and, in many cases, male migration to urban centers, leaving women with a &#8220;triple burden&#8221; of household, agricultural, and income-generating responsibilities<\/span>.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:313\"><span class=\"citation-54 citation-end-54\">Women also perform 76.2% of global care work, which intensifies with environmental degradation and resource scarcity<\/span>. <span class=\"citation-53 citation-end-53\">This increased workload reduces their opportunities for income and limits their access to education, healthcare, and decision-making processes<\/span>.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"17:1-17:29\"><strong>Towards a Just Transition<\/strong><\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"19:1-19:242\"><span class=\"citation-52 citation-end-52\">For Sri Lanka to achieve a truly &#8220;Just Transition&#8221; that leaves no one behind, its climate policies must move beyond a purely economic focus and adopt an intersectional approach<\/span>.
