With the mixed electoral system and the women\u2019s quota, the elections, which are expected to be held on the 10th of February 2018 will be a historic moment. The need to introduce a women\u2019s quota has been opined by women\u2019s groups including the Women and Media Collective for decades and this is indeed a step forward to increase women\u2019s representation in the political sphere.<\/p>\n<p>The head table included representatives of five women\u2019s groups in the island including Vilithu from the North and East, Women\u2019s Resource Center from Kurunegala, Rural Women\u2019s Front, Women\u2019s Development Center in Badulla, Working Women\u2019s Front from Galle and the Women and Media Collective from Colombo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/womenandmediacollective\/videos\/1726979370657147\/\">Click here to watch the live stream of the press conference<\/a><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A media briefing to highlight the importance of the 25% women\u2019s quota brought about for the upcoming Local Government elections was held at the Renuka Hotel in Colombo.
