The Women and Media Collective (WMC) attended the meeting organised by the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government on the 27th of February, to discuss the implementation of the 25% quota for women in local government.
WMC together with other women’s organisations in the country met with Hon. Minister Faizer Mustapa to ensure that the quota was in place and that there will be no changes made to the present Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Act.
At the meeting the Minister said that the quota will stand as it is and that Ministry along with the Elections Commission will take measures to implement the quota in the relevant local governments.
Following the Local Government elections, which was held on the 10th of February 2018, there were reports which claimed that the 25% quota for women may not be fully implemented. Thus, in a letter to the Elections Commissioner, Political Parties and Speaker of Parliament, women’s organisations and activists, strongly urged for the legally binding 25% quota be fully implemented.
