WMC mourns the demise of Professor Emeritus Swarna Jayaweera who left us on the 5th of January 2020. She was a revered researcher, teacher, mentor to all and a staunch advocate for women’s rights. We extend our prayer, love and support. May she rest in peace. Our condolences.

Professor Swarna Jayaweera has made a significant contribution in the field of education. She pursued an honors degree and doctorate at the University of London and in 1954 was awarded a “Khan” gold medal. By 1966 she had published more than eighty books and articles on myriad of themes varying from education, women and development, socio-economic development, labour children rights and gender. Prof. Jayaweera is a founding member of the Centre for Women’s Research which is a mandate to empower women, raise awareness among women to protect their rights and for networking.
