Fairness prevails for the murder and rape of FTZ woman worker says women’s groups

A high court judge sentenced a medical doctor, of the Negambo hospital, to death on the 3rd of September 2014 for the murder of young woman in 2007.

Chamila Dissanayake (23) who was working in the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Katunayake was raped, strangled and then pushed to hear death, according to medical reports, from the top floor of the Negambo hospital by Dr. Indika Sudharshana Balage. Chamila hails from a small village in the Moneragala district that took up a job at a smart shirt garment factory in Katunayake.

High court Judge M.M.A Gafoor while proclaiming the death penalty for the murder further sentenced the doctor to 15 years of imprisonment for the second charge of rape together with a fine of Rupees 10,000. If the fine was not paid by the doctor he will be accounted for a term of 6 months in prison.

Women’s groups from the region, Women’s Centre and Free Trade Zone General Workers Services Union (FTZGSWU), had paid close attention to the case since 2007.
