About CATAW

Coalition for Assisting Tsunami Affected Women

The Coalition for Assisting Tsunami Affected Women (CATAW) was established immediately after the tsunami in December 2004 by existing women’s organizations and networks in Sri Lanka. CATAW was established to identify and respond to the needs of tsunami affected women and girls. CATAW received funding and donations from various organizations and individuals, and was in operation from December 2004 until July 2006

CATAW work focused on lobbying and advocacy and the rights and needs of tsunami affected women and girls at community, national and international levels; a training of trainers program for community workers; livelihood disbursement and research on tsunami affected women. In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, CATAW in conjunction with other women’s organizations, conducted fact-finding missions in tsunami affected districts to ascertain information on gender specific needs and issues. CATAW would like to acknowledge the contribution of the community workers, trainers, research interviewers, training and research participants, and all of the individuals and organizations who provided donations.
