Among the greatest challenges for the world today are the new waves of violent extremism (VE), currently manifesting in the Asia region, including cross border fertilization and spill overs and extra territorial responses to the rise in extremism. The emergence of populist authoritarianism in the region has also strengthened extremist violence particularly in Sri Lanka, while Indonesia has been dealing with violent extremism in the wake of its democratization process, in 2000.

WMC concluded a two country research project on Women’s Agency and the Gendered Impact of Violence in Asia with specific reference to Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The outcome of this project was to develop new grounded knowledge on VE from a gender perspective with a purpose to shift the narrative from one of scrutinized counter terrorism to that of the lived experiences of women and thereby the community to contribute to developing local pathways of change.
